An apartment designed by Quatrobase has made it to the shortlist for the annual Design Now award, a prestigious recognition by the Interior + Design magazine. The founders of Quatrobase, Svetlana and Ilya Khomyakov, consider this project to be the most intricate and refined in their portfolio.

The clients wanted an interior that was unique but not flashy. The design process was guided by the concept of "hidden outrageousness". Instead of using color, which is a typical approach for Quatrobase, the designers focused on materials and textures to create the desired effect.

The apartment features numerous custom-made items, each created specifically for this project. One such item is a rug, commissioned from the atelier Art de Vivre. Svetlana and Ilya chose the Murugan collection as a starting point. These monochrome rugs with a distinctive texture are popular among designers. However, the standard options didn't meet the project's requirements. The Khomyakovs needed a rug of a specific size to seamlessly integrate with the sofa area without extending beyond the furniture's edges. Given the custom nature of the interior design, a bespoke rug was inevitable.

The resulting Murugan rug, handwoven by Nepalese artisans for the spacious living room, stands out not only for its size but also for its unusual rounded shape. The designers aimed to soften the strict architecture of the living room, highlight the furniture's rounded forms, and eliminate any sharp corners in the sofa area. The ability to perfectly match the material, color, and texture of the rug was an added advantage in solving this design challenge.
